First edition (second state). Octavo. viii, 524, (1) pp, bound in full calf. VG-. Contains half-title and errata/announcement. I5, Q7, U6 are in the second state; E3, E4, M4 are cancels as described in Pottle 57. Measurements match the copy in the British Museum as recorded by Pottle. Bound in full calf, quite possibly the original binding. Rebacked in leather with titles applied. Rebacking is worn and rubbed, most noticeably on the hinges. Binding is firm and tight. Leaves are lightly toned with an occasional spot of foxing. Overall a very good copy. [Pottle 57] [Rothschild 458]

Second edition. Quarto. 581 pp; 17 chromolithographs and 300 wood engravings created under the direction of M.A. Racinet; all edges gilt. Text in French. Bound in original leather-backed pebbled cloth with coat of arms of the city of Paris on cover and gilt tooling and titles on spine. VG- scattered moderate foxing throughout including the margins of several plates, but mostly in prelims, the plates are otherwise bright and clean. This book features manners and customs, literature, the sciences and arts in France from 1590 to 1700.
